I would like to introduce myself. My name is Masako Nishikawa.I am a Japanese Traditional Dancer of the Nishikawa style.
Does Japanese Traditional Dance sound historical? Japanese Traditional Dance was originally born out of the energy from the public. The feelings they had while watching Odori (Traditional Japanese Dance) and Kabuki were probably the same as what today's young generation have toward pop stars and rock bands. That is why I want everyone to think back to the powerful pop culture of the past.
Unfortunately the fire of traditional art is dying. People's heart have grown apart from them. There are many reasons why this has happened. It could be too difficult to understand the "old"entertainment, or the tempo maybe too slow. But I feel, as a traditional entertainer, I cannot let this fire go out. We have a responsibility to rekindle the blaze and pass the flame on to the next generation. I am one of the traditional entertainers that believes this. However, I cannot do extraordinary things by myself. I enjoy dancing and expressing myself on stage. These are the things I can do.
I "whisper" on this site hoping everyone will feel closer to Japanese traditional entertainment.

August, 2003

I visited Tokyo on August 13th - 15th to practice dance for the upcoming Nagoya Odori performance with Mr. Emisaburo Ichikawa and Mr. Shuuen Ichikawa. Later I appeared on the TV program " Ladies 4". I also had a meeting with Mr. Jia Peng Fang to discuss the performance at the Menard Aoyama Resort on the 20th of September. This program will be set in the golf club house and will consist of two programs. The first is "Hagi to Tsuki" and danced to traditional Japanese music. The second will be danced to a song which is composed by Mr. Jai called "A Water Lily". The song has a very beautiful melody and I am hoping to choreograph a very elegant stage. I am looking forward to the challenge. I hope to be able to make a major performance with Mr. Jai in the near future. Mr. Jai is a very talented musician and has excellent taste in the field of music. He also has a wonderful personality. Several days ago he hosted a concert and the way he played with his co-players made me feel wonderful. I hope to see you at the "Kanzuki no Yube" performance on the 20th of September.

We are now working hard preparing for the Nagoya Odori Performance. This year`s Nagoya Odori`s major dance piece is "Koi no Rosho", which is a reproduction of a piece that was performed 33 years ago by my grandfather, Koisaburo Nishikawa II, the second Headmaster of the Nishikawa School. I will be playing the leading part, Rosho Toyotake. The two young dancers, Mr. Emisaburo Ichikawa and Mr. Shunen are our special guest dancers. They are providing a strong young energy to our Nishikawa dance. Three years ago I hosted the radio show "Salon du Masako" for one year. One time, Shunen appeared on my show as a guest and our friendship started from there. He introduced Emisaburo to me and we have kept in touch throughout the years. I am very happy and excited to be making such a wonderful performance with them.
I hope to see many people at this year`s Nagoya Odori and I wish it will be a wonderful experience for everyone.
